Office News
Dr. Meersand was again selected as the secretary of the South Shore Study Club for the 2008 - 2009 year. The South Shore Study Group is the longest active study group on Staten Island. She served as president and secretary the last few years. The club has over 50 active members (all of whom are dentists from Staten Island). The group meets 5 times a year for continuing education seminars. Membership has grown over the last few years. The lecture topics of our evening meetings in October 2007 were "Minimally Invasive Dentistry- Laser Dentistry for the 21 st Century" presented by Dr. Ron Kaminer- a national authority on this topic and "Understanding Proper Criteria for Implant Abutment Selection" by Dr. Robert Schulman. The evening presentation reviewed all the new implant systems used in the construction of the most aesthetic types of anterior restorations. On January 14, 2008 Dr. Edward Goldin presented "Implant Provisionalization- The Keys to Success" and our last meeting of year highlighted Dr. John Cavallaro discussing "Implant Prosthetics- Removable vs. Fixed Temporary Implant Restorations".
Drs. Heller & Meersand held their annual continuing education seminar for the Staten Island dental community on April 23, 2008- featuring Drs. Nick Elian & Ziad Jalbout! Drs. Heller & Meersand's annual meeting is the largest dental meeting held on Staten Island each year!
Drs. Elian & Jalbout are recognized, both nationally and internationally, as leaders in aesthetic implant dentistry. Dr. Elian is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Periodontics & Implant dentistry at New York University College of Dentistry. He is an accomplished prosthodontist and has published widely on the topic of aesthetic implant dentistry. Both Drs. Elian & Jalbout are involved in Clinical Research at NYUCD. In a simultaneous lecture, Lisa Schneider & Associates reviewed with office staff members the best patient management practices used to keep a dental office current. We enjoyed seeing over 250 members from our dental community there!

Check out the article in THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, TUNING UP THE BABY BOOMER BODY. "Floss your teeth: Everyone knows dental hygiene is important for healthy teeth. However, it is also important for your heart! A growing body of evidence shows a link between periodontal disease and stroke and heart disease.
In a study published last year in the Journal Stroke, for example, those with severe periodontal disease had a 4.3 times greater risk of stroke than those with either mild or no periodontal disease. Scientists believe that infection in the mouth increases the level of inflammation in the blood, which can lead to stroke and heart attack. Periodontal disease is most common in those over 50.
